Marking the end of World War I

November Morning

Meeting of German armistice delegates, 1918By Jan Dunne

A soldier sleeps shrouded by mist, blind to the
Rats fat on the flesh of fallen comrades. While
Military men in the Forest of Compiegne
Ink an agreement in a railway carriage to
Silence the guns and end the grim horror.
Then, that very same day at the eleventh hour
In damp November trench earth,
Cold troops slump in dazed disbelief
Each mad with thoughts of home.
